How Long Does Fresh Meat Last in the Fridge? | Beem Farms

There have been plenty of times I’ve opened the fridge, seen meat sitting there and thought:

“I bought this a few days ago… is it still okay?” 😅

If you’ve ever found yourself doing the same thing, you’re definitely not alone.

Sometimes we buy fresh meat with every intention of cooking it that evening. Then work gets busy. The children need something. Dinner plans change.

Before you know it, two or three days have passed.

So, how long does fresh meat actually last in the fridge?

The answer depends on the type of meat, how it is stored and how cold your refrigerator is.

Here’s a simple guide.

How Long Does Fresh Meat Last in the Fridge?

As a general food-safety guide, your refrigerator should be kept at 4°C (40°F) or below. Raw poultry, seafood and ground meats generally should be cooked or frozen within 1–2 days, while whole cuts of beef and similar red meats can generally be kept for 3–5 days.

MeatRecommended refrigerator storage
🐔 Raw chicken1–2 days
🥩 Ground beef1–2 days
🥩 Beef steaks/roasts3–5 days
🐐 Goat meat3–5 days for whole cuts
🐟 Fresh fish/seafood1–2 days
🍲 Cooked meat3–4 days

For goat meat specifically, USDA guidance says ground goat meat should be refrigerated for 1–2 days, while roasts, steaks and chops can generally be kept for 3–5 days.

Important: These are general storage guidelines. If your meat has specific use-by or storage instructions on its packaging, follow those instructions.

1. Raw Chicken: 1–2 Days

Chicken is one of those proteins I don’t like leaving in the fridge for too long.

If I’m not cooking it within the next day or two, I’d rather freeze it.

USDA guidance recommends keeping raw chicken refrigerated at 40°F/4°C or below and cooking or freezing it within 1–2 days.

This is particularly useful when you’ve bought chicken in bulk.

Instead of keeping everything in the fridge and hoping you’ll cook it soon:

Portion → package → freeze what you won’t use immediately.

2. Beef: 3–5 Days for Whole Cuts

Beef gives you a little more breathing room.

Fresh beef steaks, roasts and chops can generally stay refrigerated for 3–5 days at 4°C/40°F or below. Ground beef and variety meats have a shorter recommended window of 1–2 days.

So if you bought beef on Monday and you’re planning to cook it on Wednesday or Thursday, proper refrigeration can generally work.

But if Friday comes and you’re still thinking about it?

Freeze it rather than keep pushing your luck.

3. Goat Meat: Don’t Forget About It

Goat meat is another favourite in many Nigerian homes.

Pepper soup.

Stew.

Grilled goat meat.

Goat meat can make a great family meal, but like other fresh meats, it shouldn’t simply sit in the refrigerator indefinitely.

Whole goat cuts such as roasts, steaks and chops can generally be refrigerated for 3–5 days, while ground goat meat should generally be used or frozen within 1–2 days.

If you don’t have a meal planned for it soon, the freezer is your friend.

4. Fresh Fish: 1–2 Days

Fish is another protein where I prefer to plan ahead.

The FDA recommends storing seafood in a refrigerator at 40°F/4°C or below if it will be used within two days; otherwise, it should be properly wrapped and frozen.

So if you’ve bought fresh fish today and you’re not cooking it tomorrow or the following day, consider freezing it.

5. What About Cooked Meat?

This one is much easier to remember.

Cooked meat, poultry and seafood can generally be kept in the refrigerator for 3–4 days.

So that pot of stew or leftover chicken from Sunday shouldn’t still be sitting in the fridge a week later because you keep saying:

“I’ll eat it tomorrow.” 😂

How Can You Tell If Meat Has Gone Bad?

This is where many people rely too heavily on smell or appearance.

A strange smell, unusual appearance or slimy texture can be a warning sign, but you cannot always tell whether food is safe simply by looking at it, smelling it or tasting it. Harmful bacteria may be present without obvious signs of spoilage.

So don’t taste questionable meat “just to check.”

If you’re unsure whether meat has been stored safely, the safest option is to discard it.

How to Store Fresh Meat Properly in Your Fridge

A few simple habits can make a big difference.

🧊 Keep your fridge cold

Your refrigerator should be at 4°C (40°F) or below. A refrigerator thermometer is useful because the dial on your fridge doesn’t always tell you the actual temperature.

📦 Keep meat covered

Store raw meat in its packaging, a sealed container or securely wrapped packaging.

This helps prevent raw juices from contaminating other foods.

⬇️ Keep raw meat away from ready-to-eat food

You don’t want raw chicken juices dripping onto vegetables or food you’re about to eat.

Keeping raw meat contained and separated helps reduce cross-contamination.

⏰ Don’t leave meat sitting outside

Perishable foods should generally be refrigerated within 2 hours, or within 1 hour when the temperature is above 32°C/90°F.

This is especially worth remembering when you’re coming home from the market in hot weather.

When Should You Move Meat From the Fridge to the Freezer?

This is probably the simplest rule I’ve adopted:

If I know I’m not cooking it soon, I freeze it.

Don’t wait until the meat has been sitting in the fridge for several days before deciding what to do with it.

If you’ve bought:

🐔 Chicken for next week’s meals
🐐 Goat meat for pepper soup later
🥩 Beef for the weekend
🐟 Fish you won’t cook immediately

Portion it, package it properly and freeze what you don’t plan to use within the recommended refrigerator window.

That way, you’re planning ahead rather than trying to rescue food at the last minute.

Fresh Meat Storage Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

One thing I’ve learnt is that having fresh meat at home is much easier when the meat is already properly processed and packaged.

Instead of coming home with a large quantity of meat and spending another hour cleaning, sorting and portioning everything, having your proteins prepared properly can remove a lot of that work.

That’s part of what we focus on at Beem Farms.

Our proteins are hygienically processed and carefully packaged, making it easier to stock your fridge or freezer and get on with preparing your meals.

Whether you’re buying:

🐔 Raw Chicken
🐐 Goat Meat
🐏 Premium Ram
🥩 Beef
🐟 Fish
🍗 Shredded Chicken
🔥 Smoked Meats

the goal is simple:

Quality proteins that fit into real family life.

The Simple Rule I Try to Remember

If you’re standing in front of your fridge wondering whether the meat you bought several days ago is still okay, that’s probably a sign to start keeping track of when you bought or stored it.

My simple routine is:

Buying today → cooking soon → keep refrigerated.

Not cooking soon → portion → freeze.

It takes a little planning, but it saves food, reduces waste and makes those busy evenings much easier.

And honestly, when you’re already trying to figure out what everyone is having for dinner, the last thing you need is to start wondering whether the chicken in the fridge is still safe. 😅
